US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that Iran had agreed to accept extensive international monitoring of its nuclear programme for an extended period, describing the move as a significant concession amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
The remarks came days after technical-level discussions between US and Iranian officials in Switzerland aimed at easing tensions and advancing negotiations on nuclear and regional security issues.
Tehran Rejects Claims on IAEA Access
Trump’s statement followed Iran’s rejection of earlier comments by US Vice President JD Vance, who had suggested that Tehran agreed to allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to return to the country.
Iranian officials denied that any new arrangement had been reached regarding inspections and stated that cooperation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog would continue under existing procedures.
Despite Tehran’s position, Trump maintained that Iran had accepted what he described as the “highest level” of nuclear inspections and argued that such commitments were essential for future negotiations.

Nuclear Monitoring Central to Negotiations
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said enhanced inspection mechanisms would ensure what he termed “nuclear honesty” and asserted that continued diplomatic engagement depended on Iran’s willingness to maintain transparency regarding its nuclear activities.
The US administration has repeatedly emphasised verification and monitoring as key components of any future agreement involving Iran’s nuclear programme.
Strait of Hormuz Mentioned in Broader Understanding
Trump also suggested that the reported inspection arrangement formed part of a wider understanding between the two countries.
He indicated that, in light of what he described as concessions from Tehran, the United States would not pursue an immediate naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important global energy corridor.
However, he noted that US naval assets would remain deployed in the region and could respond if circumstances changed.

Sanctions Relief and Humanitarian Supplies
The US President further stated that any funds released under sanctions-relief measures would be placed in escrow mechanisms overseen by American authorities.
According to Trump, the resources would be used exclusively for humanitarian purposes, including the purchase of food, agricultural products and medical supplies.
Iran has not publicly confirmed the existence of any such arrangement.
Uncertainty Remains Over Final Agreement
While both sides continue diplomatic contacts through various channels, significant differences remain over the scope of inspections, sanctions relief and future nuclear commitments.
Analysts note that conflicting public statements from Washington and Tehran highlight the challenges facing efforts to achieve a comprehensive agreement.
