India and the United States on Tuesday intensified efforts to advance negotiations on a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), as Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions with visiting US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and senior American officials in New Delhi.
The talks are aimed at finalising an interim trade arrangement and advancing the broader framework of the India-US trade partnership.
Positive Signals From Both Sides
Following the meeting, Goyal expressed optimism about the progress of the discussions.
In a post on social media platform X, the minister welcomed the US delegation and said he looked forward to productive discussions on the bilateral trade agreement between the two countries.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor also highlighted the importance of the ongoing negotiations, describing the discussions as part of efforts to finalise a trade deal between India and the United States.
Senior Officials Participate
The meeting at Vanijya Bhawan was attended by senior trade officials from both countries.
India was represented by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and chief negotiator Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce. The US delegation is visiting India as part of ongoing trade negotiations.
According to official sources, discussions are centred on issues related to the first phase of the proposed bilateral trade agreement.

The ministerial-level engagement follows negotiations between chief negotiators from both countries held in New Delhi from June 2 to June 4.

Officials indicated that the current round of talks is intended to provide final shape to the framework of an interim agreement before moving toward a comprehensive trade pact.
Earlier, Commerce Secretary Agrawal had stated that discussions between Goyal and Greer would focus on resolving remaining issues and accelerating progress toward an interim arrangement.
Trade Deal Expected Soon
Recent statements from leaders on both sides have reflected growing confidence about the negotiations.
US President Donald Trump recently stated that India and the United States were “very close” to concluding an agreement. Goyal has also indicated that both countries are working to bridge outstanding gaps and target the first phase of the BTA for completion in the coming weeks.

The discussions form part of the broader trade dialogue launched by the two leaders on February 13, 2025, and are taking place amid evolving global trade conditions and changes in the US tariff regime.
Officials from both countries are expected to continue consultations in the coming days as efforts continue toward concluding an interim trade arrangement and advancing the wider bilateral trade agreement.
Writer’s opinion
The question now arises as to when both sides will seal this trade deal, given that the opposition in India has repeatedly accused the government of kowtowing to the US and President Trump over it. In this context, the deal will be significant for India’s economy in several respects.
