The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday issued an official update on star batter Shreyas Iyer’s health, confirming that he sustained a “blunt injury” to his abdomen during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney.
Details of the Incident
Iyer injured his lower left rib cage while diving to take a difficult catch of Alex Carey off pacer Harshit Rana’s bowling. Though he initially walked off with the physio’s support, his condition deteriorated later as his vitals dropped, prompting immediate hospitalisation.

Medical Findings and Treatment
Subsequent medical examinations revealed internal bleeding due to a laceration in his spleen. The 29-year-old was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding on 25th October during the third ODI against Australia,”
the BCCI stated.
The board added that the bleeding was promptly arrested and Iyer’s condition has since stabilised. A follow-up scan on October 28 showed “significant improvement,” and the player is on the road to recovery.

Ongoing Medical Supervision
The BCCI medical team, in consultation with specialists in India and Sydney, continues to monitor his recovery closely.
Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of BCCI’s medical services, praised the on-field medical staff for their quick and effective response, which prevented a critical escalation.
Meanwhile, sources revealed that Iyer’s family is expected to travel to Sydney soon to be by his side during his recovery phase.
