In a major political development, Nepal’s youth-led Gen Z group on Saturday announced its intention to form a political party, signalling its active participation in the country’s democratic process ahead of the 2026 general elections scheduled for March 5. The group clarified that its participation would depend on the fulfillment of certain “bottom-line” conditions.
Gen Z, which played a pivotal role in the ouster of the K P Sharma Oli-led government, has been at the forefront of protests against corruption and the government’s ban on social media. Speaking at a press conference, Gen Z leader Miraj Dhungana outlined the party’s agenda, emphasising consolidation of Gen Z voices across Nepal and greater citizen-led governance.

Dhungana stated that the party’s electoral participation would remain conditional on the introduction of a directly elected executive system and extending voting rights to Nepali citizens living abroad. He also proposed the formation of a citizen-led corruption control committee and clear economic transformation policies.
Highlighting economic concerns, Dhungana stressed boosting domestic production and developing the tourism sector, while urging the government to reopen closed industries and create new employment opportunities. He warned that failure to address youth unemployment and economic stagnation, exacerbated by mass migration, would be a failure of past governments.

Nepal’s political landscape was recently shaken by violent protests led by Gen Z, resulting in Prime Minister Oli’s resignation. The unrest, which included deadly clashes with security forces, underscored growing frustration among Nepal’s youth over government policies and corruption.
The Gen Z group is currently collecting suggestions for an “appropriate” name for the new party as it prepares to formally enter the political arena.
