India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar has clarified that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not on trial during the upcoming ODI series against Australia, dismissing speculation that their performance in the three matches could determine their future for the 2027 ICC World Cup.
Speaking to NDTV, Agarkar said it would be “silly” to assess the veteran duo’s long-term prospects on the basis of a single series, citing their exceptional records — Kohli’s average of 57.9 and Rohit’s 48.8.

“They are incredible players who have achieved everything — not just runs, but trophies. The 2027 World Cup is still far away, and once they resume playing regularly, their progress can be evaluated gradually,” Agarkar said.
Kohli and Rohit, who now only play the ODI format, have been away from international cricket for nearly six months. By the time of the 2027 World Cup in Southern Africa, Rohit will be 40 and Kohli 39.

Agarkar emphasised the importance of maintaining team balance while valuing experience, saying: “No team wants to play without experienced players. You want senior guys around to guide the younger ones. Legacy cricketers have earned respect through performance, and you treat them accordingly.”
India will face Australia in the first ODI in Perth on Sunday at 9 a.m. IST.
