In a significant development, Commissionerate Police have arrested a man for allegedly spreading rumours on social media following the Cuttack immersion violence during Durga Puja. The accused, identified as Pradeep Chandra Sahu, was apprehended by Bharatpur Police. Sahu is a resident of Brahmeshwar Patna under Badagada Police Station limits in Bhubaneswar.
According to police, Sahu repeatedly posted objectionable and caste-based content, using abusive language and spreading misinformation. Social media monitoring by the Commissionerate Police revealed his role in inflaming tensions, prompting authorities to warn strict action against anyone found inciting unrest online.
The Cuttack immersion violence occurred during the late-night Durga Puja idol immersion in the Dargha Bazaar area between 1:30 am and 2 am on 4-5 October 2025. The clashes were triggered when some locals objected to the loud music played by the Jhanjirimangala Bhagabat Puja Committee procession.
The situation escalated as stones and glass bottles were hurled from rooftops, resulting in injuries to at least 25 people, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo. Several vehicles, motorcycles, and roadside stalls were also damaged amid the chaos.
In response, the Odisha government imposed a curfew in 13 police-station areas, suspended internet services, and deployed 60 police platoons along with eight paramilitary companies to restore law and order.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and cooperate with police to maintain peace.
