The United States Senate has confirmed Sergio Gor as the next U.S. Ambassador to India, marking the appointment of one of former President Donald Trump’s closest aides to a key diplomatic post in New Delhi.
Gor, 38, was among 107 nominees approved by the Senate in an en bloc vote, with 51 senators voting in favour and 47 against. Along with his ambassadorial role, he will also serve as the Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs.
A seasoned Republican strategist and political fundraiser, Sergio Gor has long been associated with Donald Trump and the Republican Party. He previously served as Director of Presidential Personnel in the Trump administration and played significant roles in both Trump’s campaign and transition teams.
Praising Gor’s appointment, former President Trump described him as “a great friend who has been at my side for many years,” adding that Gor is someone he fully trusts “to deliver on my agenda and help us Make America Great Again.”
At his Senate confirmation hearing, Gor emphasized India’s growing global influence, calling it a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.” He underlined the importance of strengthening bilateral trade, defence, and technology ties, stating that closer cooperation would enhance U.S. competitiveness and reduce China’s economic leverage globally.
“India’s role in ensuring regional stability and security cannot be understated,” Gor told lawmakers, stressing that “a stable South Asia is in the interest of the United States and all nations.”
He further pledged to advance the U.S.–India partnership, describing it as a relationship that “will define the 21st century.”
