At least 12 people were killed and several others injured after two gunmen opened fire during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, Australian media reported. The event was attended by an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 people.
The New South Wales (NSW) Police confirmed that one of the attackers was killed during an exchange of fire with officers, while the second gunman was injured and taken into custody. Authorities said more than 50 shots were fired, triggering widespread panic as people fled or sought shelter.
Government Condemnation and Emergency Response
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing,” stating that police and emergency services were working on the ground to save lives. He extended condolences to all those affected.
Emergency services transported multiple victims to hospitals across Sydney as the beachfront area was placed under lockdown.
Suspect Identified; Terror Angle Under Probe
Australian authorities identified one of the gunmen as 24-year-old Naveed Akram, a resident of Bonnyrigg in south-west Sydney. Counter-terrorism teams are investigating a possible ideological or extremist motive, citing the deliberate targeting of a religious and cultural gathering.

Security agencies conducted raids at Akram’s residence to examine possible online radicalisation, extremist material, and links to overseas narratives. Investigators are also reviewing digital footprints and potential international connections.
Footage Shows Chaos and Civilian Intervention
Videos circulating on social media captured chaotic scenes as gunfire erupted, with witnesses shouting warnings and crowds scattering. One widely shared clip showed an unarmed civilian confronting and overpowering one of the attackers.
Authorities said the nature of the attack — including coordinated clothing, the presence of two attackers, and sustained firing — suggests advance planning.

International Reactions and Condemnations
Israeli President Isaac Herzog called the attack “vile,” expressing solidarity with the Jewish community in Australia. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned what he described as a “ghastly terrorist attack” targeting people celebrating Hanukkah.
Israeli officials also raised concerns over rising antisemitism in Australia, citing repeated warnings and a surge in reported anti-Jewish incidents.
Investigation Ongoing
Australian authorities have not yet confirmed the motive behind the attack. Police said the security operation remains active and urged residents to avoid the area as investigations continue.
