Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has once again captured the internet’s attention with a cryptic post on social media ahead of India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia. The Indian team arrived in Perth on Wednesday night, and on Thursday morning (October 16), Kohli posted a tweet at 10:00 AM IST that instantly went viral.
“The only time you truly fail, is when you decide to give up,” Kohli wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The tweet triggered a wave of speculation and concern among fans, many of whom feared that Kohli might be hinting at a possible retirement from ODIs.
However, it was later revealed that the message was part of a promotional campaign for Kohli’s apparel brand, Wrogn. In a follow-up promotional clip, he added, “Failure teaches you what victory never will.”
Speculation Over Kohli’s Future
Despite the clarification, Kohli’s post reignited debate over his future in ODI cricket. The 36-year-old last played an ODI for India on March 9, 2025, against New Zealand in Dubai, scoring just one run from two deliveries. With 54 runs needed to become the second-highest run-scorer in ODI history, Kohli is expected to reach the milestone in the upcoming series against Australia.

Some fans believe that Kohli might retire from the 50-over format after the series, while others view his post as a motivational response to critics questioning his ODI form and future.
Recent Retirements
Kohli, one of India’s most successful captains, announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, following disappointing series against New Zealand and Australia. The decision surprised fans who were expecting him to play in the England series later that year.
Earlier, he had retired from T20Is on June 29, 2024, after India’s T20 World Cup triumph against South Africa at Kensington Oval. Kohli was named Player of the Match in the final, scoring 76 runs off 59 balls before announcing his T20I retirement on the podium.
