Shami’s fiery spell on the final day, which yielded four crucial wickets for 38 runs, highlighted his match-winning abilities and resilience, sending a clear message amid ongoing discussions about his fitness for India’s ODI squad.
The performance came just a day after India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar had remarked on Shami’s readiness for international cricket, suggesting that he had yet to regain full match fitness. Shami, however, let his bowling do the talking, posting on social media: “I am here to stay. When hard work meets experience, results look like this! Well done Bengal boys!”
Bengal resumed the final day at 165/2 with captain Kunal Chandela on 68 and Bhupen Lalwani on 12. Shami immediately exploited the morning conditions, striking with precision and pace. He first trapped Chandela LBW for 72, initiating a dramatic collapse. After lunch, Shami returned with renewed aggression, dismantling the middle and lower order by dismissing Abhay Negi, Janmejay Joshi, and Rajan Kumar. Akash Deep and Ishan Porel supported the effort by picking up two wickets each, as Uttarakhand were bowled out for 265, losing their last eight wickets for just 92 runs.
Former Himachal Pradesh opener Prashant Chopra (82) and Chandela were the only batters to offer significant resistance, adding some respectability to Uttarakhand’s total before the innings concluded in the 97th over.
