Following India’s heavy defeat to South Africa in the first Test at Eden Gardens, questions have emerged over whether Test captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir share a unified vision on home pitch conditions.
Gill Advocates Sporting Wickets
Ahead of the recent home series against West Indies, Gill had asserted that India would no longer rely on rank turners.
He had emphasised a shift toward “wickets that offer something to both batsmen and bowlers,” signalling a balanced approach to pitch preparation.
Eden Gardens Pitch Contradicts Gill’s Stand
However, the pitch in Kolkata told a different story.
- It began deteriorating on Day 1
- The Test ended within three days
- A total of 38 wickets fell
- Spinners claimed 22 wickets, pacers 16
India collapsed while chasing 124, losing by 30 runs – South Africa’s first Test victory at Eden Gardens in 15 years.

Gambhir Stands Firm: ‘This is the Pitch We Wanted’
In contrast to Gill’s philosophy, Gambhir defended the rank turner, stating that his team had specifically planned for such a surface.
He placed responsibility for the loss on the batters, asserting:
“If India had won, no one would be talking about the pitch.”
Several deliveries, however, behaved unpredictably, troubling batters like KL Rahul and Aiden Markram.
Experts Criticise the Surface Strongly
Former cricketers including Cheteshwar Pujara, Harbhajan Singh and Dale Steyn heavily criticised the pitch, describing it as unfit for Test cricket.
