The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday provided a detailed medical update on India Test captain Shubman Gill, confirming that he will travel with the squad to Guwahati for the second Test against South Africa. However, a final decision on his participation will be taken after further assessment.
Recovering from Neck Injury Suffered During Kolkata Test
Gill sustained a neck injury on Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. He was kept under observation and discharged the following day.
According to the BCCI, Gill has “responded well to medical treatment” and will continue to be monitored by the board’s medical team.

BCCI’s Official Statement
“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was taken to hospital after the day’s play. He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to medical treatment and will travel to Guwahati with the team on November 19. His participation in the 2nd Test will be decided after further monitoring,” the statement read.
Impact on India in the 1st Test
Gill—who faced only three balls in the first innings—did not bat in the second innings due to the injury. India, missing their skipper at the top, failed to chase a modest target of 124 and lost the match by 30 runs.

Replacement Options if Gill Misses the 2nd Test
If Gill remains unavailable, Rishabh Pant will lead the side. One of Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan, or Nitish Reddy may be drafted into the playing XI.
