Renowned folk singer Maithili Thakur has expressed openness to joining politics, saying she would “definitely consider” contesting the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections if offered a party ticket.
In an exclusive interview with News18, the 25-year-old singer said she once had reservations about entering politics but now feels ready to shoulder public responsibility.
“I feel good that I am being considered capable of contributing to the region. Nothing has been finalised yet. As part of the program, I am meeting many leaders,” Thakur said.
Thakur, who recently met Union Minister Nityanand Rai and BJP national general secretary Vinod Tawde, sparked widespread speculation about her potential entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking about her meeting with Rai, she said,
“It felt good to meet Nityanand Rai ji, and I felt that this is the right time. And if a proposal is being offered from their side, I should accept it. Things are happening as per the designs of Ram.”
Thakur indicated that if she enters politics, she would like to contest from her hometown Benipatti in Madhubani district, where she shares a deep personal and cultural connection.
“Starting from there will also give me a chance to learn. Meeting people, talking to them…I will understand more if I start from my village,” she said.
The Benipatti Assembly seat is currently represented by senior BJP leader Vinod Narayan Jha, who won against Congress’s Bhavana Jha by over 30,000 votes in the 2020 elections. The constituency is considered a Brahmin-dominated seat.
During her recent discussions with BJP leaders, Thakur said the focus was on Bihar’s development and future priorities. She also expressed her willingness to contribute “in every possible way” to the nation’s growth.
Born in Benipatti, Thakur hails from a family of musicians. Her father, a noted Maithili music artist, trained her from an early age. Rising to fame for her performances in folk and devotional music, Thakur began her professional journey in 2011 and has since become one of the most prominent young voices representing Bihar’s cultural identity.
The Bihar Assembly elections will be held in two phases—on November 6 and November 11, with vote counting on November 14.
