Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a gathering of farmers and textile workers in Coimbatore on Wednesday, remarked that the sight of farmers waving gamchas (traditional towels) made him feel as if “the winds of Bihar had arrived in Tamil Nadu” even before him.
Modi said the vibrant welcome brought back memories of celebrations in Bihar, where gamchas are often waved at political rallies and public events.
Acknowledges Language Barrier, Praises Local Leadership
The Prime Minister noted that he would have felt honoured to understand the earlier speeches fully if he knew Tamil. He praised Coimbatore’s longstanding economic contribution, especially through the textile sector, and highlighted that the city’s importance has grown further with the region’s CP Radhakrishnan serving as the Vice President of India.

Focus on Natural and Sustainable Farming
Calling natural farming a subject “close to his heart,” Modi said India was rapidly emerging as a global hub for organic and natural agriculture. At the summit, he felicitated farmers and innovators promoting sustainable farming methods.
He shared anecdotes from his visit to the exhibition, where he met individuals who left engineering careers, academia, and even NASA to return to agriculture and train young farmers.
Modi Salutes Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Spirit
Modi said the visit was a learning experience and praised the resilience and adaptability of Tamil Nadu’s farmers. He emphasised that natural farming represents a major opportunity for India and is rooted in traditional practices such as Panchakavya and Jeevamrutam.
