The Odisha government has suspended internet and social media services for 48 hours in several parts of Cuttack city after violent clashes broke out during Durga Puja idol immersion processions.
The restrictions, effective from 7 PM Sunday to 7 PM Tuesday, cover mobile internet, broadband, and all online platforms, including WhatsApp, Facebook, X, Instagram, and Snapchat.
Violence Erupts During Immersion Procession
The first incident occurred late Friday night near Dargha Bazaar when a Durga idol immersion procession reportedly faced objections over loud music. The confrontation escalated near Haathi Pokhari between 1:30 AM and 2:00 AM, as stones and glass bottles were hurled from rooftops.
At least six people were injured, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo. Several vehicles and shops were also damaged during the violence.
Fresh tensions resurfaced on Sunday afternoon, when protesters clashed with police at Dargah Bazaar, injuring six officers, including the DCP and the area’s police inspector-in-charge. Some journalists were also hurt, prompting police to lathi-charge the mob to restore order.
Internet Blocked to Prevent Spread of Misinformation
In its official notification, the Home Department said the suspension was imposed to stop the circulation of “provocative or inflammatory messages” that could incite further unrest.
The ban applies across the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, Cuttack Development Authority region, and 42 Mauza areas affected by the violence.
So far, six people have been arrested, and police are analysing CCTV and drone footage to identify more suspects.
Tight Security Across Odisha
Despite the unrest, the police ensured smooth immersion ceremonies across other regions of the state.
Additional Police Commissioner Narsingh Bholo said,
“Comprehensive security arrangements have been made. Officers are deployed even on rooftops along procession routes to prevent any untoward incidents.”
In Bhubaneswar, DCP Jagmohan Meena confirmed peaceful immersion events, with 55 police platoons deployed across five major sites — Palasuni, Hanspal, Basuaghai (Tankapani Road near Kuakhai River), Lingipur (Daya River), and near NIT Chandaka.
To address environmental concerns, authorities have set up artificial immersion pits along riverbanks to reduce pollution, with coordinated efforts from the fire department, police, and municipal staff ensuring safe and eco-friendly celebrations.
