In a major relief for devotees, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday announced the lifting of the long-standing ban on organising Chhath Puja on the Yamuna river, paving the way for grand celebrations this year.
CM Gupta Announces Large-Scale Arrangements
Addressing the media, CM Gupta said the government is constructing 17 model Chhath ghats along the Yamuna and will provide complete facilities such as tents, lighting, sanitation, and toilets at over 1,000 locations across the capital.

“For years, the government had banned Chhath Puja on the Yamuna. This time, after our government came to power, we have lifted that ban and are ensuring full arrangements,” she said.
Record Participation Expected
The Chief Minister highlighted that the scale of this year’s celebrations will be much larger than before. “Last year, Chhath events were held at only 929 sites. This year, we’ve already received over 1,000 applications from committees to host the festival,” Gupta stated.

Cultural Programs and District-Level Ghats
Gupta also announced that each district and sub-district will have at least one model ghat, while welcome gates and floral showers will greet devotees. Cultural performances in Bhojpuri and Maithili languages will be organised to promote festive unity and cultural vibrancy.
Chhath Puja Significance
Chhath Puja, dedicated to the Sun God (Surya Dev) and Chhathi Maiya, is one of the most revered festivals among devotees from Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, who form a significant part of Delhi’s population.
